This is an great solution for those who don't have enough budget to go for a paid charting tool. It provides a good set of basic shapes and graph types which enable you to complete your work. It works fast and does not demand a lot of computer resources.
The shape and graph tool library is sometimes not large enough so in that case you will have to go with a paid solution like Visio or Lucidchart.
Maybe a more rich library of symbols could get the best from this software
yEd is free, easy to use and fulfills the majority of our needs for diagramming networks and servers.
The palette of icons is limited in terms of available computers / servers / networking equipment, therefore the diagrams look a little repetitive.
What I like the most about yED is that it has absolutely any feature that you can think that a diagramming and graphing editor should have. It most useful, powerful feature is that it rearranges your flow diagrams for you based on criteria that you set. Using this feature allows you to go wild and add branches everywhere on your diagrams which yED will then rearrange neatly for you when the time comes.
What I liked the least about yED was the initial learning curve it took to get everything right. There are a lot functions that do not work seamlessly, and you need to click around a bit to figure out how to get the program to respond the way you expect it to. I also think it is outdated that you have to manually resize blocks when text overflows it; this is a bit of a downer for me.
Free software with capabilities similar to Visio.
User Interface isn't completely intuitive. Takes some time to learn it.
This software is designed to help create flow charts and other types of organizational diagrams. It is similar to Vizio, but free. Can also import and export to Vizio. The interface takes a little bit of getting used to if you are familiar with MS Office type applications but after getting used to the way it works you appreciate quickly how it makes the process of making high quality illustrations very easy. It is superior in every way to trying to do the same thing in Word or Powerpoint where you have to fiddle constantly with alignments to get a diagram to look right. There are also a ton of customizations for nodes and different types of chart templates for a variety of standard uses. Files can be saved in native .graphml format or easily exported to many other files types.
There is a bit of a learning curve to get good at using this software. Not really a con, because the investment in learning to use it properly is worth it. Definitely recommend reading a bit about the software before jumping in.
Grátis
Would like a few more shapes and libraries.
Yed makes it simple to just start drafting relationships between entities in a drawing and worry about how to best order and present those at a later time.
I wish there was an option in Yed to easily make sequence diagrams similar to Web Sequence Diagrams.
I've never managed to get anything good from the auto-arrange feature, it's probably worth only for massively imported data. It's not really a widespread program and although it uses a supposedly standard format, there's not much interoperability with other graphing tools (if you start drawing with this, you have to end with this).
This piece of SW is dedicated to creating high quality flowcharts, org-charts, mind-maps and the likes with ease. You'd probably never ever need to pay for anything like Visio. Moreover, yEd is available for Win, MacOS, and Linux, and you can even run a live version from any suitable browser. And, being free, its performance/price ratio soars to infinity :).
yEd has a bit specific philosophy, including the user inetrface, but once you learn it, you make your charts in a snap.
yED is so easy to use, from a developer perspective. i use yED for the creation of flow charts and class diagrams for projects and
The software is abit easy to use from a developer perspective. However there are many non developers that create flowcharts. So maybe making a user friend interface will polish the app.
